Individual Music Lessons:

We have wonderful and talented musicians offering individual instrument lessons, Piano with Ms. Vadha Rajaratnam and Guitar with Mr. James Anderson.  Please understand that all scheduling/rescheduling, payments and any other communication regarding a student's individual music instruction should happen directly with the instructor, NOT through the school Admin offices.

Wood Turning:

Wood Turning classes are fabulous, but a little difficult to schedule given that we are trying to schedule exactly 4 students for each of the 4 sessions, so that each student has a lathe.  You may include a preference for the day your child wants to take wood turning, but there may be some back and forth with this once all requests are in to try to get the classes leveled out.  So please understand and be patient.

Ms. Helen's Dance:

Please be advised that Ms. Helen's Dance Classes (all ballet and tap classes) require a FULL YEAR commitment working toward a year end dance recital.

Instructor Bios and Class Descriptions

Mr. David Jenkins

Football, Glorious Football!   There is no other game that brings the world together. All you need is ball and four sweaters, and it’s game on! While growing up in Europe I ate, slept and breathed the sport of Gods. And now I bring that thirst to the Caribbean!  In addition to supporting the Mighty Leeds United, I have played the game for over thirty years. As well as coaching and playing at youth club level and University in the UK, I also enjoyed a couple of semi-professional stints in Sweden, Denmark and Spain, while teaching. With some of the major clubs in the world banging down my door, I had to make a hard decision and I chose the life of an educator instead. With age, comes craps and what I call “lack of exceptional speed”. Since arriving here three months ago, therefore, I have joined forces with Senor and play with him and his cronies on the weekend.

Soccer - Academy Students

Although I initially did not plan to run this programme, I spoke with the students in the IA and got the impression that there was a demand for football (music to my ears!). In addition to learning and perfecting individual skills, we will also focus on fitness, position and tactics. This is intended to be a session for all IA kids to come and play, have fun and improve. Depending on numbers, I would like to organize some friendly matches throughout the year. Football does not need to be a season sport, indeed it should not be! So come on; let’s play!

Mr. Dodson has teaching experience as a qualified SCUBA Instructor and has certified over 500 divers!   He is also certified emergency first response (CPR and first aid, basic life support).

T-Ball / Beginning Baseball

Physical fitness is at the corp of my beliefs.  This is a great way for students to exercise while having fun.  The students will learn the rules of baseball and develop batting skills either via a batting "T" or coach-pitch.  Our space is limited, so beginners only please - heavy hitters might put other students on the playground or steel pan stage at risk.

Music

Mr. Michael Barr

My involvement in music started in school music programs.  I played trumpet in every group available in my school years.  Love for music led to a decision to major in music at the college level.  I studied general music at Sonoma State University in California, then transferred to The University of Tennessee where I concentrated on trumpet performance and Jazz studies.  After some time supporting myself in other trades, I returned to school and received my Bachelors' Degree in jazz Studies from the university of New Orleans.  Influential teachers along the way have been:  Jerry Coker, Catherine Leach, Michael ray, Clyde Kerr Jr. and Terence Blanchard.  I am also a certified Level I Orff Schulwerk instructor.

My performance history has been extensive and diverse.  While jazz is my primary interest I have also played Classical, Latin, R & B, Theater and Pop music in academic and professional settings.  Prominent venues have included The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, The House of Blues, Tipitinas, and the Montessori Music Festival on St. Thomas,  I am active in the St. Thomas music community performing as leader, sideman or guest in many jazz sessions, lead Trumpet and substitute Director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble, and Trumpet Soloist at The St. Thomas Reformed Church.

I have been the General Music teacher at Joseph Gomez elementary school for four years where I also direct the Concert Choir and Primary Choir.  In addition, I created the Computer Music Lab and direct its after school program.

Music Studio

Prerequisite: Music studio is a class intended for students with two or more years instruction on their chosen instrument.

  3. Technology Applications;  we will learn to use the computer as a tool to further individual musical goals, surveying software programs for Composition, Notation, Practice tools and Tutorials.
In this course students will choose individual projects in musical creation. With the instructorʼs guidance they will develop their ideas and share them with the group where they will be performed and expanded. We will also learn and perform songs with an emphasis on theory, analysis arranging and improvisation. This course is not intended to provide specific instrumental instruction or substitute for it. Instead it is meant to expand the students developing skills and give them new avenues of exploration especially in the area of creating music and playing with others.

Ms. Cynthia Gomez Martin

Born in the beautiful Canary Islands (Spain), located off the coast of Morocco, she was always surrounded by art. She developed a passion for dance from an early age. The sounds of music, both in school and at home, were a source of constant inspiration. She studied dance at The University of South Florida though faced a challenging decision to complete her scientific degrees instead. During her undergraduate years, she continued to pursue dance through different dance groups in the Tampa Bay Area. The years of graduate school brought much passion and historical maturity to her dance. She discovered the beautiful rhythm of Cuban Salsa and became hypnotized by its elegance and soul. Ms. Gómez Martín has taught Salsa in The US Virgin Islands for the last two years. During her last years of graduate school, she discovered and fell in love with the sounds of the African
drums through The Makare African Dance Family. She practiced and performed with them throughout North Florida in numerous events.

Ms. Ms. Gómez Martín has been practicing Zumba® Fitness since 2007 and has been sharing the Zumba love as an instructor since 2010 at Yacht Haven Grande, The Jackson Complex, and The UVI Wellness Center. She is currently certified to teach: Zumba, Zumba Gold, Zumba In the Circuit, Zumba Toning, Zumbatomic and Zumba Gold|Toning.

Zumbatomic

Designed exclusively for kids (ages 4-12), Zumbatomic classes are rockin', high-energy fitness-parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-
friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Parents love the Zumbatomic program because of the effects it has on kids — increasing
their focus and self-confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination. The Zumbatomic program rounds out family fitness goals by giving parents a great reason to head to the gym – for themselves, for their kids, for a totally fun family experience.

What is Zumba

Zumba® Fitness is the Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music, created by Grammy Award-winning producers, and contagious steps to form a "fitness-party" that is downright addictive. Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba program has grown to become the world's largest – and most successful – dance-fitness program with more than 10 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 90,000 locations across more than 110 countries.
