Haitian Relief Efforts

VIMSIA Students at all levels are collecting money for Haiti in their "Change for Haiti"  program.  Each classroom has an empty 5 gallon jug and the children are encouraged to bring in any change they have - they will see their progress and will count and roll the change to be sent off.

Ms. Paul is able to accept Contributions for Ms. Florence's Family in Haiti.  Ms. Florence's mother, her siblings, her daughter and many nieces and nephews are still in Haiti and could use our help financially.
See the article in The VI Source about Shelby's amazing reunion with parents Florence Fontus and Lamarre Maignan.

USVI Haitian Relief efforts, orchestrated by Carmen and Waring Partridge are coordinating Haitian relief efforts from the USVI.  They are finding and scheduling planes, establishing funding, coordinating medical personnel and supplies.  There are flights to Haiti as frequently as they can manage.  Many thanks to them for their efforts, and to other private individuals like Donald Sussman for donating their private aircraft and other critical supplies & services. This is a huge relief effort with hundreds of Virgin Islanders doing what they can to help.    Donald Sussman donated the plane that returned infant Shelby Maignan to his mother, our own Ms. Florence of LA Casa.  Shelby was in Haiti visiting relatives when the earthquake hit.  It is amazing that this 13 month old child was not hurt and almost as amazing that he is now safely back in St. Thomas.  It would not be so without the help of Carmen and Waring Partridge and Donald Sussman.

"The unknown energy that can help humanity is that which lies hidden in the child.”

We will keep a list of supplies needed "now" on this website.  It will be changed daily.  Items can be dropped off at VI Montessori School or preferrably at the St. Thomas Jet Center by the airport.  Please label any items "Haitian Relief".

Volunteers are needed to shuttle items from school over to the jet center daily.  Volunteers are also needed to help at the jet center organizing supplies to be sent.

Kim Russell is our USVI Haitian Relief volunteer coordinator at the school.  Please call or email her (kdmrussell@gmail.com, cell 216.409.6962)  to signup for helping out.

Knee pads: most of the medical teams work is being done on their knees.  We were hoping volleyball players would donate their knee pads immediately, and would orchestrate a collection with other teams on the island.   Amy checked for new knee pads on island and they are out.  Rebecca Brahm, Vicki Jones, Jessica Rosenberg, Mike Williams...I know you are all intimately involved with volleyball, can you help to organize this with the kids?

Tackle boxes: the team is having to carry around many supplies while working on patients and need something to carry these items around.    I think makeup boxes or arts and crafts boxes of a certain size could also work.

labels : As supplies come in, they are having to organize, package and label the items.  Any size labels are needed.

Protein : Please bring tuna in the stay fresh zip package only (no cans, unless they are pull top), protein snack bars, or vacuum sealed smoked salmon fillets to Barefoot Buddha.

Lollipops:  The medical team likes to give lollipops to the kids to provide a much needed sweet distraction.   Any flavor, any kind.
