Dr. Maria Montessori 8/31/1870 – 5/6/1952
First Italian woman to receive her medical degree also an educater and noted humanitarian. She is known for her philosophy of education - "Montessori Method of Education".  Her educational method is in use today in public as well as private schools throughout the world. During World War II she was forced into exile from Italy because of her antifascist views and lived and worked in India.  There she developed her work "Education for Peace" where many of her ideas are taught in her training courses today.  She was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, "The children are now working as if I did not exist."
